Over Our Heads

Diving these last few days has generated delight and surprise for those lucky enough to be diving Gorontalo’s hidden paradise. First, divers enjoyed a slow pass by a pygmy manta (mobula ray). The dive boat crew didn’t know about the manta but asked if we saw the large Risso’s dolphin jumping over our heads. Since we missed that encounter, the boat crew took resting divers out to where a pod of Risso’s were sunning in the calm deep waters. The next day three eagle rays passed almost within arms reach right overhead of divers. During the rest stop both a manta and a small eagle ray were jumping. Then local fishermen told us that a couple hours earlier a large whale swam slowly by while spouting plumes of water. In Gorontalo, when a shadow passes over the reef, look up!
